The Digital Thread, Model Based Enterprise, Model Based Definition, and Mechanical Variation Management

Ed Walsh, Sigmetrix

Time: 11:40 – 12:15, Day 1

This presentation will attempt to provide a better understanding of how manufactures are attempting to create a “digital thread” that connects product requirements, engineering, manufacturing, quality, and more. It will offer practical suggestions of the benefits to a company and the required investments based on real world interaction with global manufacturers. It will also offer observations on why companies are struggling to successfully achieve these objectives. How the Digital Thread, Model Based Enterprise, Model Based Systems Engineering, Model Based Definition, and Mechanical Variation Management are related. How high level System Requirements can connect to mechanical specifications and then down to manufacturing operations on features on individual parts through a digital thread. Why companies are struggling to implement Model Based Definition and how they can be more successful What industries, global regions, and companies are leading in adoption of Model Based Definition and why. What is the potential financial impact on the business. How these initiatives are similar to the shift from 2D drawings to CAD models that happened twenty years ago and what we can learn from history
