Advanced MBE Methods that Inform Bidirectional Communication Between Manufacturing and Quality Disciplines

Tom Groff, Kotem

Time: 13:50 – 14:25, Day 1

Manufacturing and Quality disciplines consume data and publish data to the digital thread. What data should be included for optimizing the various interactions between Manufacturing and Quality? Learn how Manufacturing can benefit from Quality data, and how Quality can benefit from Manufacturing data. When you know Manufacturing operation details from CAM and inspection details and results from MBE, the inputs and feedback to machines and software can be more comprehensive and correct. This yields higher throughput, better quality and optimized costs. We will discuss the following tools and processes for maximizing on the Manufacturing and Quality digital thread data that is available through Model Based Enterprise (MBE) practices. • Simulating Manufacturing Data in the Design Phase to inform proper GD&T • Using Manufacturing Datum and Setup Information from CAM in inspection • When to use STEP vs QIF for Digital Thread Standardization • Determining Feedback from Part Inspection to Manufacturing Tools to Control Processes o Traditional Tolerancing vs GD&T o Single Part vs MultiPart SPC • Iterating on Manufacturing Setup Operational possibilities to yield optimized functional requirements and GD&T characteristic results. • Quality input differences between Subtractive and Additive Manufacturing • Using Quality data in Casting operations.

Speakers Biography

Tom is the President of Kotem and also holds the position of VP – Enterprise Products for OGP/QVI. Kotem has software products to support the full MBE workflow with emphasis on GD&T. OGP offers a full line of metrology hardware products. Tom holds degrees in Aerospace Engineering and Technology Management.

If you deal with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), KOTEM EVOLVE software helps you improve your product tolerances across your enterprise from design to volume manufacturing processes.

About the Presentations

The presentations at the Nordic Model Based Enterprise Forum 2025 bring together real-world expertise, strategic insight, and hands-on experience from leading companies and organizations across industries. Each session is designed to demonstrate how Model Based Definition (MBD) is being implemented in practice — from engineering and quality assurance to manufacturing and enterprise-wide integration.

Speakers share success stories, lessons learned, and technical approaches that highlight both the benefits and the challenges of transitioning to a model-based workflow. These presentations provide attendees with the opportunity to explore tested strategies, innovative tools, and collaborative methods that are shaping the future of digital product development.

Whether you’re looking to understand the foundational value of MBD or explore advanced applications like CAM automation, metrology integration, or tolerance analysis, the sessions in this forum are curated to offer insight, inspiration, and actionable takeaways.
