Smart Manufacturing & MBE: The Role of Metrology

Helena Björk, RISE

Time: 13:00 – 13:40, Day 2

Manufacturing industries undergo rapid digital transformation and Model-Based Enterpsie (MBE) is emerging as a key enabler for targeting high efficiency, precision, and automation. At the same time, metrology—the science of measurement is also under development to meet the challenges of digital manufacturing. Processes need to remain reliable, traceable, and adaptable to changes in real-world conditions. The European Metrology Network (EMN) for Smart Manufacturing is driving the development to keep an industrially Strategic Research Agenda that aligns metrology innovation with the needs modern manufacturing. The Nordic Model Based Enterprise Forum in Malmö will bring vital input to that agenda. Our goal is to support the industry vision in realizing the “zero defect, zero delay, zero surprise, and zero waste” in new projects to develop and demonstrate fast, reliable, sustainable, and fully digitalized metrology technologies. The EMN Task Group on Smart Manufacturing Systems plays a vital role in integrating metrology in MBE. We want to ensure that measurement processes and quality assurance are seamlessly embedded into digital models. Through real-time, model-driven validation and decision-making, this synergy supports automated, adaptive, and intelligent manufacturing systems.
Helena Björk is a Project Manager at RISE, Cluster coordinator of Swedish Production cluster and appointed member of European Metrology Network for Advanced Manufacturing in Task group 2. Smart manufacturing system. Mechanical Engineering background with focus on Industry product development and project technical lead, mostly in Energy sector but also in Oil & Gas sector. Cluster coordinator of Swedish Manufacturing cluster in Geometry and quality. Participant in Production council of Production2030, a Swedish strategic innovation program.

About the Presentations

The presentations at the Nordic Model Based Enterprise Forum 2025 bring together real-world expertise, strategic insight, and hands-on experience from leading companies and organizations across industries. Each session is designed to demonstrate how Model Based Definition (MBD) is being implemented in practice — from engineering and quality assurance to manufacturing and enterprise-wide integration.

Speakers share success stories, lessons learned, and technical approaches that highlight both the benefits and the challenges of transitioning to a model-based workflow. These presentations provide attendees with the opportunity to explore tested strategies, innovative tools, and collaborative methods that are shaping the future of digital product development.

Whether you’re looking to understand the foundational value of MBD or explore advanced applications like CAM automation, metrology integration, or tolerance analysis, the sessions in this forum are curated to offer insight, inspiration, and actionable takeaways.
